Detroit Pistons: Move on from Dwane Casey

Casey has coached in Detriot for four seasons now and only won 82 games. Some people might want to see what he can do, but personally, I’ve seen enough. He simply can’t run the offense Detroit needs. It may be time for some fresh ideas and coach who can grow with the young team.

The two names that come to mind most are Spurs’ assistant Becky Hammon, who was a frontrunner for head coaching jobs this summer but eventually returned to San Antonio, or Scott Brooks of the Trailblazers. Hammon is yet to be a head coach in the NBA but has taken charge of the Spurs’ player development, winning a Summer League title with them in 2015. A sharp basketball mind, only close-minded fans would see this as anything other than a smart basketball hire.

Scott Brooks made eight playoff appearances between the Thunder and Wizards, and may still be at the helm in Washington if it weren’t for the unfortunate stretch of injuries to apparent superstar John Wall. Currently serving as an assistant under Chauncey Billups in Portland, he is responsible for molding Russell Westbrook, James Harden, and Kevin Durant into the stars they are and also coached a young Reggie Jackson, Serge Ibaka, and Bradley Beal.

Both of these candidates could viably solve the Simmons drama, develop Cunningham into the generational talent he is supposed to be, and make the most with who is currently on the roster. Casey still has this season and next on his contract, so does Troy Weaver think moving on this soon is for the best? Depends on what other moves the Detroit Pistons make, but I’d say so.

A total rebuild does not happen overnight, as Detroit sports fans have come to learn. But adding an elite talent and creating a scoring front court under a hungry new coach would be a massive step in the right direction.
