Detroit Pistons: Portland not the only team interested in Jerami Grant

The Detroit Pistons will explore all options this offseason when it comes to trading Jerami Grant.

The Portland Trail Blazers have long been rumored to be the team to watch, but there could be several teams potentially pursuing a Jerami Grant trade this offseason.

In addition to Portland, teams like Dallas, Utah, Chicago and Atlanta were all rumored to be after Grant at some point this season, though it doesn’t seem like the Detroit Pistons were ever that close to trading him.

While most of those rumors have cooled, the Atlanta Hawks have once again surfaced as a possible trade candidate according to James Edwards III of the Athletic (SUBSCRIPTION REQUIRED. IT’S WORTH IT.) He and Hawks’ beat writer Chris Kirschner discussed what a trade might look like, and to be honest, it wasn’t all that enticing for the Detroit Pistons.

Detroit Pistons: Proposed Jerami Grant trade to Hawks is not enough

There were a couple of possibilities discussed, but I am going to focus on one particular trade, as I think this is the type of offer the Detroit Pistons are going to get for Jerami Grant.

I am still dubious that the Portland Trail Blazers think one guaranteed year of Grant is worth the 7th pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, so I think an offer like this is far more likely:

While this offer seems somewhat fair on paper, it is not a great deal for the Detroit Pistons for a couple of reasons.

The first is that Bogdanovic has another season guaranteed at $18 million and then a player option for the same which he will almost certainly exercise. Bogdanovic is a good player and the Pistons could use his 3-point shooting, but he’s not as good as Grant overall, especially on the defensive end.

So the Pistons would be paying an extra year for a downgrade, no thanks.

They would get the 16th pick for their troubles, which is the same slot where they found Isaiah Stewart in the draft. But let’s face it, the 16th pick is a long shot to even make the rotation as a rookie, so this would be a downgrade with a splash of crapshoot. No thanks.

I suggested a different type of Jerami Grant trade width the Hawks that brought back Kevin Huerter and the 16th pick. Huerter is a younger player and would also provide a shooting upgrade, but to be honest, I wouldn’t do that one either.

If the Pistons do trade Jerami Grant, they either need to get a promising young player and a pick, or a higher pick, which is why I don’t see the Atlanta Hawks as a good fit.
