2022 NBA Draft: How Bennedict Mathurin fits on the Detroit Pistons

With an open space in the backcourt, coupled with a need for long-range shooting, Mathurin is an ideal fit next to Cade Cunningham, and could be a solid complementary piece at the very least.

While Mathurin may not boast elite-level shot creation, he has a great foundation to expand upon at the NBA level, and his shooting and off-ball movement will get him consistent scoring opportunities.

With Cunningham handling the playmaking duties, Mathurin’s willingness to cut towards the rim would certainly lead to paint touches. Mathurin’s movement would also create opportunities through him acting as a decoy, which could free up open shooters and big men in the paint.

The former Wildcat’s athleticism would also help bolster Detroit’s offense, and would certainly pair nicely in an offense with a willing passer such as Cunningham, who excels in pushing the ball up the floor with an array of passes.

In a draft laden with talent near the top, Detroit fans likely won’t have a definitive answer to who the Detroit Pistons will select with the fifth pick. While some may view Mathurin to be a longshot at five, there’s plenty to like about his game, and what he can bring to an NBA franchise immediately, along with his long-term potential.

As of right now, Mathurin’s stock appears to be rising, and with less than three weeks until the draft, he’s become a potential prospect to end up in a Pistons uniform next season.
