Pistons draft: Jaylin Williams’ strengths and weaknesses

Jaylin Williams is the kind of guy who would fit right into the culture the Detroit Pistons are trying to build, as he is a hard working player with a high motor who is unselfish and wants to make winning plays.

He’s a 6-foot-10 (in shoes) forward/center with a 7-foot-1 wingspan and above-average athleticism. He’s not a great shooter and his post game is limited, but he is that kind of glue guy who rebounds, runs the floor, blocks shots and plays above the rim.

A shocking number of recent 5th picks have been busts. light. Related Story

He has good hands and disrupts passing lanes for steals (1.3 per game) and protects the rim with 1.1 blocks per game.

He has flashed pretty good shooting form and an improving game off the bounce (as you can see in this highlight), so he has offensive upside. He also shot 72 percent from the free-throw line, so could definitely be a guy who develops a solid mid-range shot.

But for the immediate future profiles as a guy who will come in and change the game with his defense, energy, rebounding and hustle.

He had a streak of seven straight double-doubles against quality competition this season without his team running many plays for him. He averaged 10.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game, but didn’t have great efficiency, shooting just 46 percent from the floor, something that would likely change in the NBA when he is not asked to do much more than dunk.

But how would he fit on the Detroit Pistons? It really depends on the rest of their offseason.
