2022 NBA Draft: Jaylin Williams’ fit on the Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons have six team options this offseason, and could have several open roster spots depending on their decisions.

The Pistons only have two big men under contract for next season in Isiah Stewart and Kelly Olynyk, so if they don’t land a center in free agency, Detroit will have a third slot to fill.

Luka Garza will get a shot, but the Pistons need more athleticism here and Garza has not shown that he can defend in the NBA. Williams would be an immediate upgrade, give the Pistons more rim protection and a guy who can step out on switches on the perimeter.

He’d be a nice complement to Bagley III (if they keep him), as he doesn’t need touches and can just run, defend and set screens. He could also play some with Kelly Olynyk, who plays more on the perimeter, so Williams is a solid fit with the bigs Detroit already has and can play either spot in the front court.

There are a lot of moving parts here, so there are definitely scenarios where Williams would not be able to find minutes and would start his career in the G-League, but if the Pistons have a spot open they should take a flyer on an athletic big who can be a glue guy off the bench.
