Would the Detroit Pistons bring back an old face in Hamidou Diallo trade?
Detroit Pistons: Trade of Hamidou Diallo the Denver Nuggets
The answer to whether the Pistons would do this deal rests on whether they think Hamidou Diallo has a future with the team.
Like Ish Smith, Diallo is on an expiring deal and will be a free agent after the season, so if Detroit does not see him as part of the long-term plans, then getting something for him now before he walks for nothing would be prudent, even if the return isn’t much.
Smith, who has played for an NBA-record 13 teams, was a fan favorite in Detroit due to his relentless motor, but he is 34-years-old at this point, so not a guy who fits their plans or timeline. He’d likely be going to his 14th team after the season (if he doesn’t retire) so the only real prize here is a second-round pick.
The Detroit Pistons are not going to get a haul for Diallo, who is a hugely flawed player, but they can probably do better than a single second-round pick.
If they are going to move him, Detroit. can probably get a couple of seconds, or maybe even a project player on a rookie or two-way deal to bring into their system.
As much as I’d love to see Ish Smith back in Detroit, they should probably hold out for something better, but if an offer like this is the best they can do, and Troy Weaver has no intention of bringing back Diallo, then they may as well take what they can get.
