The duo that will carry the Detroit Pistons next season
Detroit Pistons: Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren on offense
The most exciting part of this duo’s potential is on the offensive end, as Cade has yet to really play with a legit roll man in the PnR and Duren is turning into a force in that regard.
We’ve seen it recently with the burgeoning chemistry between Duren and Jaden Ivey, as Ivey has averaged over six assists per game in his last 10 and over half of them have gone to Duren.
Consider that Cunningham is a much-better facilitator than Ivey, and also much more of a threat to shoot from behind the arc or the mid-range, where he was starting to morph into a force.
If you think about how Chris Paul has helped and benefitted from bigs in his career, you’ll get an idea of what Cade and Duren can be together. Cunningham played most of his minutes with Isaiah Stewart this season, who is not a good roll man, and isn’t the type of shooter who is going to drag defenders away on the pick and pop.
With Duren, who is a threat to roll to the hoop for a dunk, Cade will have a guy who will take defenders with him, giving the defense the tough choice of allowing a perimeter player to try to stop Duren on the roll if they switch and a big trying to stay in front of Cade.
Cunningham is so adept at getting to his spots and will undoubtedly rack up assists dumping it off to Duren under the hoop, plays that Stewart fumbled more times than not.
When you consider how much Stewart was clogging the space Cade needs to operate, having a true roll threat should not only help Duren get more easy buckets, but make it easier for Cunningham to do his thing, especially when there are shooters like Bojan Bogdanovic, Alec Burks and Isaiah Livers on the floor.
Fans are rightfully excited to see Cunningham and Ivey in the backcourt, but Cade’s fit with Duren is far more certain and they could be the duo to help pull the Detroit Pistons out of the cellar next season.
