Detroit Pistons: An expensive way to get off of Marvin Bagley III

Would Brooklyn trade Ben Simmons to the Detroit Pistons for Marvin Bagley III?

Ben Simmons has quite a bit in common with Bagley. He’s an athletic marvel – to an even more immeasurable degree than Bagley – and a former top two pick in the draft. At 26-years-old he’s a few years Bagley’s senior but he has approximately the same amount of NBA experience. That experience also includes being dealt by their original franchises after tantalizing moments of raw potential and frustrating failures to build on it.

The Brooklyn Nets surely have buyer’s remorse, probably more of it than any team in the NBA this season. Now that Kyrie Irving is gone, the Nets will try to build a solid squad around Kevin Durant and hope for the best. Durant is such a generational talent that they may realistically cobble together a playoff team by surrounding him with castoffs.

But even if they wanted to trade Simmons, his value is so low that he might be un-tradeable according to league sources.

Zach Lowe recently called Simmons the reason for the Nets’ problems (though they are the four-seed right now) and speculated about whether he is even an NBA starter at this point.

Simmons’ value couldn’t be lower, which would theoretically give the Detroit Pistons the chance to offload some of their own dead weight and pick up an asset in the process.
