Detroit Pistons: Two risky wings in restricted free agency

Cameron Johnson

It’s possible that the Nets view Cameron Johnson as part of their future after he came over as part of the Kevin Durant trade.

Though not really a true wing, Johnson would give the Pistons more size and shooting at the forward position, and he’s been playing well since being traded to Brooklyn.

Johnson is averaging 18.2 points and 4.4 rebounds so far for the Nets while hitting 33 percent of his whopping eight 3-point attempts per game.

He’s a talent that could help Detroit, but the risk is that he will get overpaid, as it might take a big offer sheet to get Brooklyn not to match. The same could be said of the next guy.

Grant Williams

The restricted free agent that has the highest chance of being overpaid in my opinion is Grant Williams, as he is a role player on a very good team right now, but may be exposed in a larger role.

He’s not a prolific scorer or a guy who is going to get his own shot, but the Detroit Pistons don’t really need one of those. What they need are 3-and-D wings and Williams has been a pretty good one, as he is a tough defender who has knocked down over 40 percent of his 3-point attempts the last two seasons.

The Celtics already passed up a chance to re-sign him and Williams definitely wants a raise, so his cost will really determine how big a risk he would be in restricted free agency. The Pistons just traded away Saddiq Bey, who has some similar qualities and may be looking for more athleticism at the position. Williams has shown he can be an impact role player on a good team, but to invest in him in free agency would be risky.
