#3: Developing a free agent strategy

There probably isn’t one guy in the 2023 free agent class who is going to save the Detroit Pistons. They have to decide if they want to throw most of their cap space at one player or to try and add several role player types instead.

This will be one of the crucial decisions of Troy Weaver’s tenure, as he doesn’t want to repeat the mistakes of the past GM’s by overpaying a role player.

He may also feel that adding a couple of veteran defenders would be enough along with Cade coming back to make Detroit competitive for the play-in next season, which is all fans are really hoping for.

Detroit is not a hot free-agent destination, so acting quickly and decisively will be their best chance at landing the players they want. If they have already identified that person, then they need to have a plan ready now. How much are they going to offer? How much is too much?

They will likely have to be patient on their own free agents (specifically Hamidou Diallo) so should be prepared to lose them if some other team makes an offer.

This is the one that Weaver really can’t mess up, and signing no one would be preferable to signing the wrong guy.
