Troy Weaver and the Detroit Pistons are heading into an important offseason.
They already have young talent with more on the way in the 2023 NBA Draft, but for the first time in his tenure, Troy Weaver is under some pressure to put together a winning team.
The last four years have been about tearing it down and adding young talent and Weaver has done that, as the team he has looks nothing like the one he inherited and he has a solid foundation of young talent in Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren.
Now comes the part where he has to build a team around them by adding the right talent in the draft (or using that pick to make a trade) and adding the right complementary players.
For the most part, fans of the Detroit Pistons have been patient during this process, are still showing up for games, and still have hope for the future, but is that patience starting to wear thin?
We did a poll that asked the simple question “Are you happy with Troy Weaver” and the results showed that fans are hanging in with this regime.
Detroit Pistons: Are fans happy with Troy Weaver?
The poll got 404 votes, so is obviously not representative of the entire fanbase, but it gives us an idea of how Pistons’ Twitter is feeling about the job Troy Weaver is doing.
As you can see, 45.5 percent of those who answered are fully happy with Weaver and still in “Trust in Troy” mode. It’s understandable, as these last few years have been about talent acquisition and hope and Weaver has provided some of each.
He’s hit on most of his draft picks, and taken some swings at high-end talent, even though those haven’t really worked out yet. He’s about to bring on an exciting new coach, could land the #1 pick in the draft and things are looking up.
A slightly less 44.8 percent are in wait and see mode, so over 90 percent of those who were polled were positive or neutral leaning positive. The wait and see people need to see how this offseason turns out. If the Detroit Pistons land the number one pick and grab a top free agent like Jerami Grant (the dream offseason), Weaver is going to look like a genius and most of these people will jump head first into the “Trust in Troy” group.
But there were 9.7 percent of those who are not happy with Troy Weaver. Most in the comments pointed to the lack of success from the 2020 Draft, the trade for Marvin Bagley III or the questionable acquisition of James Wiseman. Some talked about his desire to play two bigs and his inability to put together a coherent roster.
Weaver definitely has a chance to win that small group over with a big offseason by making the Detroit Pistons into a competitive team. Stay tuned.
