2 possible assistant coaches with connections to Pistons and Weaver
The Detroit Pistons made a hard push to land head coach Monty Williams and it eventually paid off for both, as Williams signed a massive contract and Detroit got one of the most decorated coaches on the market.
Williams’ first hire was Stephen Silas, who was most recently the head coach of the Houston Rockets and was likely brought on to try and fix the Pistons’ woeful offense.
Now Williams and Troy Weaver have to fill out the rest of the staff and could look to bring in some assistant coaches that have connections to the team.
Here are two that I’d love to see sitting on the Pistons’ bench next season.
2 possible assistant coaches with connections to Pistons and Weaver
Rasheed Wallace
Wallace was one of the smartest players of his generation and you may recall that he helped bring a title to Detroit during the Goin’ to Work era. Wallace already had one stint as an assistant in Detroit but they could look to bring him back after he’s worked with Penny Hardaway and former Pistons’ coach Larry Brown as an assistant in Memphis. Two of the Pistons’ big men went to Memphis (though Wallace wasn’t there with Wiseman), so who better to mentor them as they try to navigate playing alongside each other?
Wallace was one of the original stretch fours, but also had a dominant post game and was one of the smartest defenders in the NBA. He’d be a great mentor for the Pistons’ young big men and a nice fit on Monty Williams’ bench.
Darko Rajakovic
Rajakovic is a guy Troy Weaver is very familiar with after the two spent six years in OKC together, Weaver in the front office and Rajakovic as an assistant on the bench. Rajakovic, who hails from Serbia, is considered a very sharp basketball mind and has been well liked by players everywhere he has been. He’s currently an assistant at Memphis and has been credited with helping Ja Morant’s development.
He keeps getting promoted because of it, and would be a great candidate to take on a leading assistant role for the Pistons. He’s going to be a head coach in the NBA one day and has already been getting looks from teams this offseason, so Detroit could take advantage of his knowledge before that happens.
