Detroit Pistons’ season countdown: 42 days for #42
The Detroit Pistons have some of the best fans in all of professional sports.
I know this because I have a job writing about them even though the team hasn’t won a playoff game in 15 years, the longest drought in the NBA.
Younger fans don’t even have the benefit of the fond memories of the Bad Boys and Goin’ to Work eras, but they are still here and I commend them.
Hopefully, that loyalty will pay off soon, as the Detroit Pistons have an exciting cast of young players led by Cade Cunningham, and could finally see some progress in the restoration we’ve long heard about.
With training camp less than a month away, we aren’t long from seeing meaningful basketball, with just 42 days until the regular season tips off for the Detroit Pistons.
Detroit Pistons’ season countdown: 42 days for #42 Jerry Stackhouse
Continuing with our countdown series, today we will honor #42 Jerry Stackhouse, who was one of the most prolific scorers to ever play in Detroit.
Stackhouse averaged 22.1 points, 4.4 assists and 3.7 rebounds in over 300 games for the Pistons, making the All-Star team twice and narrowly missing the scoring title in the 2000-2001 season when he averaged 29.8 points per game.
He still owns the single-game scoring record for the Detroit Pistons after dropping 57 points on the Bulls in April of 2001.
He did it with only four 3-pointers, which seems almost unthinkable by today’s standards, as most of the big scoring performances rely heavily on long-range shots.
The Pistons were savvy with Stackhouse, as they got most of his prime years and were then able to flip him in a big trade that landed Richard Hamilton, who became a key part of a title team.
Stackhouse never enjoyed much team success with the Pistons, but he is still all over their record books and had some great individual games and moments while in the Motor City.
