The Detroit Pistons currently have an open roster spot and have given no indication how, when or if they plan to fill it.

The open spot gives GM Troy Weaver more wiggle room to make trades, as he could make a deal that brings back an extra player, which is a possibility given some of the veterans on the roster.

With Joe Harris, Alec Burks and Bojan Bogdanovic all on some form of an expiring deal (Bogdanovic’s is only partially guaranteed after next season), it seems unlikely that all three end up on the roster past next year’s trade deadline.

But it’s not as simple as just swapping out one of these veterans for more young players or draft assets, as the Detroit Pistons are trying to improve now.

Detroit Pistons: Building the roster a balancing act for Troy Weaver

On one hand, the Detroit Pistons have veterans who are somewhat valuable trade assets on expiring deals, which means if Detroit doesn’t re-sign them or get something for them before or at the trade deadline, they could walk for nothing.

On the other, this is a very young team that needs some veterans dappled into the rotation, as teams whose players are all 23 years old or younger are unlikely to win in the NBA.

So Weaver is going to have to decide when and if to pull the trigger on some of these guys, and whether the return is really worth giving up the only real veteran talent they have. Weaver also has his own job to consider, as Tom Gores is going to expect some return on his investment at some point and there need to be signs of progress next season.

Keeping those factors in mind, this proposed deal with the Memphis Grizzlies is a tough one to evaluate.
