Cade Cunningham is still only 24 years old. He’s young, especially in NBA years. But the Detroit Pistons are ready to win right now. He’s ready to win right now. And he has the perfect blueprint to follow: Victor Wembanyama. Wemby has led the San Antonio Spurs to the NBA Finals, and Cunningham now has a perfect mirror to stare into.

Wemby has displayed incredible leadership. His defensive hustle is unmatched. His emotions have been left on the court each and every time he plays. Those are the things Cunningham needs to watch. Not to say that he hasn’t displayed the right qualities, but Wemby has provided him with the exact example he needs to follow.

If the Pistons want to win a championship, Cunningham has to lead them there. And he now has the perfect blueprint to copy.

Cade Cunningham needs to watch Wemby closely

Obviously, the Pistons and Spurs are not built the same way. Right now, it’s impossible for any team in the association to be built quite like San Antonio, because nobody else has a Wemby.

Wemby is already on track to be one of the greatest NBA players of all-time, and he’s already the greatest individual defender I’ve ever watched with my own two eyes. It would be impossible for any other team in the league to replicate that.

But there are things that can be pulled from the Spurs and Wemby, in particular, that could help young teams strive for championships in the near future.

First and foremost, the leadership Wemby has shown on and off the court has been incredible. Whether it’s lifting up teammates, communicating with the coaching staff, or embracing the fanbase and creating new initiatives, he’s quickly become the off-court leader in San Antonio.

And on the court, his hustle, energy, and constant intensity have clearly lifted the Spurs to where they are today. Those are all things young players around the league should take note of.

Cunningham included.

The Pistons are still a very young team. But they are already one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. They were one game away from a Conference Finals appearance this season.

So, as Cunningham learns and evolves, Wemby should be the blueprint. The blueprint for on- and off-court leadership. How those traits can help a team make a deep playoff – and Finals – run.

Cunningham is ready. The Pistons are ready. And now, the perfect blueprint for winning while still being young has emerged. It’s Wemby.
