Cade Cunningham has had a terrific start to the season and is playing like a true superstar while leading the Pistons to the best record in the East. But he’s still missing one key component to his game: reliable three point shooting. However, Cade has been uncharacteristically bad from long range this season and is bound to return to his usual self soon enough. which should be a scary sight for the rest of the NBA.
Cade will inevitably shoot better over time
This season Cade’s scoring at the rim and in his selective mid range attempts are better than ever but his three point percentage is just a dismal 28%. Even worse, he's shooting only 14% on wide open threes. The Pistons have actually done a good job of getting him open looks, but he hasn't been able to convert this season. Last season, he shot 36% from deep - a better representation of his shooting ability.
Cade has shown clear improvement since last season in every other facet of the game, including becoming more comfortable getting his shot off whenever he wants. Considering his general scoring success this season and the return of Jaden Ivey, who can get him some more spot up three-pointers, Cade is set for greater success from beyond the arc soon.
The Pistons are already dominating their schedule and sit at 15-2 in first place atop the East. Cade has been dominant offensively and is averaging 27 points and 10 assists per game. Knocking down an extra three pointer every game or two can truly elevate him to rare statistical air.
Reliable three-point shooting also makes a true three level scorer. His combination of size, ball handling and creative shotmaking already make him a nightmare cover for opposing defenses. Cade is always comfortable getting to his spot at his own pace and has a game that should translate beautifully to the playoffs.
However, adding more potency in his three point shooting both off the dribble and off the catch will give Cade and the Pistons even more options. He showed some promising signs of this development in the Pistons’ recent win over the Bucks. In the game, Cade shot 3-of-6 from three-point range including some very impressive ones off the dribble. This included a step back three and another pull-up one that only the league’s brightest stars hit consistently.
The Pistons have thrived this season even with their superstar having a significant shooting slump. As he naturally bounces back from this stretch of bad luck, he will give the Pistons even more production and elevate the offense. The 29 other NBA teams are about to find out that the Pistons can get even better from their hot start.
