Ron Holland II may be the Detroit Pistons’ biggest wildcard for next season, as he is just 20 years old with worlds of room to grow.

And there’s a good chance he decides the success of their summer, one way or another.

The Pistons could trade Ron Holland II

Because of his age and productivity on a good team, Holland is one of the Pistons’ best trade chips and almost certainly a guy teams will ask for if Detroit trades with a franchise looking for young talent and draft assets.

Even though Holland was benched in the playoffs, he was a top five pick and is still younger than many of the players in the 2026 NBA Draft even though he’ll be entering his third season in the league next year.

Rebuilding or young teams like the Mavericks and Pelicans would likely want Holland in any deal for their stars, as he amounts to having another first-round pick in this draft.

Holland could end up being extremely important to the Pistons as a trade chip this summer, so he could be a marquee part of the Pistons’ future even if he’s not on the team.

Ron Holland II could have a breakout season

If you believe in the upside of players who are older and just spent the last few seasons in college, then you should believe in the upside of Holland, who won’t turn 21 until next month and already has real NBA experience on a good team.

Holland happened to land on a good team that already had talent at the same position, so unlike most top five picks, Holland didn’t go to a bad team where he’d get to play huge minutes with impunity. If he had, he may be viewed differently around the league.

Holland has already shown himself to be an impact defender and all-around hustle guy, so if he can develop an outside jumper and get a little better at finishing around the rim, the Pistons could have their two-way wing of the future already on the roster.

The question is whether the Pistons have the patience to find out, as Holland may end up being one of those guys who doesn’t blossom until a bit later in his career. The Pistons would be gutted to see a 24-year-old Holland killing it for some other team, which is something they’ll take in consideration in any trade offer, especially one for an older player like Kyrie Irving.

The inclusion of Holland could be enough to put the Pistons off and seek trades where he is not a necessity to get the deal done.

Holland will be a big part of the summer, either by being a key component to a trade, or by improving and starting to turn into the guy the Pistons thought he was when they drafted him.
