The pick swap the Detroit Pistons received as part of the Jaden Ivey trade has already been on a wild adventure since the deadline.

The Pistons got the 2026 Draft swap with the Minnesota Timberwolves and for the initial phase it looked great for the Pistons.

And they need it to be, as they’ve gotten painfully little from Kevin Huerter (the other part of the trade), and it would be nice to at least get some kind of asset from a guy who was a top five pick just a few years ago.

Huerter still has a chance to make an impact this season, but it appears as though the pick swap will be the big prize from the Jaden Ivey trade.

Just a few days ago, that gambit wasn’t looking too optimistic, as the T’Wolves had climbed up to 3rd in the standings, and the Pistons went from potentially getting the 21st pick to the 26th in the blink of an eye.

Things are shuffling nearly every night in the Western Conference, and a recent slide from Minnesota has the Pistons right back where they want to be...for now.

The Pistons are in the pick swap sweet spot and hope to stay there

The pick swap with Minnesota is protected in the top 19, so the best pick the Pistons can hope to get is the 20th, but that would put them at imminent risk of getting nothing at all.

After a three-game losing streak from Minnesota, the Pistons sit at 21st, which is the sweet spot for this particular swap.

But don’t expect things to stay the way they are, as the T’Wolves are tied with the Nuggets and just a half game behind the Lakers and Rockets, so they could be right back to the 3-seed in the blink of an eye.

Minnesota is 1.5 games ahead of the Suns, so that spot is safe for now and they are a full six games ahead of the Clippers, so as long as the T’Wolves don’t move up too much, the Pistons’ pick swap should at least net them an upgrade of several spots in the draft.

This thing is likely to come down to the last game or two of the season, and we are sure to see plenty of movement between now and then, so the Pistons can’t do anything but take care of their own business and hope a wild finish works out in their favor.

The gap between the 21st and 26th pick isn’t astronomical, but it could be the difference between the Pistons landing a rotation player vs. a project. It’s also the best way to maximize the Jaden Ivey trade, as Huerter was just a rental anyway, so that pick swap is the only real payoff. Let’s hope it’s a good one.
