Cade Cunningham's injury news has sent shockwaves around the Pistons organization. Detroit hopes to get their superstar back soon, but will definitely be without his services for at least two weeks. In that time, they will lean more heavily on first-time All-Star Jalen Duren. Duren has a rare opportunity to prove himself as a first option and secure an All-NBA spot, as well as a potential huge payday.

Jalen Duren needs to step up without Cade Cunningham

The Pistons' first two games without Cade have gone well for Duren. In Tuesday's contest, which Cade left after 5 minutes, Duren poured in a career-high 36 points along with 12 rebounds in a blowout over the Wizards. On Thursday night, he was once again dominant over the same opponent - this time to the tune of 24 points and 11 rebounds in just 25 mintues.

The Pistons are at a strange crossroads with Duren; he is excelling in his role but still capped by his play style. There's rightful concern that much of his offensive impact comes from easy looks created by Cunningham. He's also up for a contract extension this summer, but the exact value of that contract will change based on how he finishes this season.

Duren doesn't usually get to play extended stretches without Cade in the lineup at all. But over the coming weeks, he'll have a clear chance to prove himself in that role and solidify his long-term value for the front office. His impact to finish this regular season and in the playoffs, regardless of Cade's availability, will make a big difference for his contract extension.

Cunningham's injury opens up a potential All-NBA spot for Duren

Cade is very unlikely to play enough remaining games to qualify for awards voting and his rightful All-NBA spot. The NBA's recent 65-game rule for eligibility has severely punished players with extended injury absences, which could affect multiple Pistons on the ballot this year. But Cade's absence might also open up a Third Team selection for Duren.

No one expects Duren to contend for First Team All-NBA like Cade, but he could make an argument as one of the top 15 eligible players. Additionally, voters may be keen to reward the Pistons, who have been a top 3 team across the league all season. It's hard not to have any All-NBA representatives for a team this good, especially considering the leaps they've made since last season.

And Duren now finds himself as the best candidate to take the credit of the Pistons' success. He is bound to get some proxy votes out of respect for Cade and the unfortunate injury that could make him ineligible. Hopefully Pistons fans will also get to see Duren play at an All-NBA level before the season ends.
