The Pistons need a veteran guard that can take some pressure off Cade Cunningham and create for himself. One low-key option who fits the bill perfectly is CJ McCollum, who is entering free agency after a solid showing in Atlanta this season. McCollum is a great stopgap solution at the shooting guard spot that brings veteran scoring and ball-handling without costing too much.
McCollum can be a great pickup for the Pistons
Even in year 13, McCollum was still a solid scorer using his deep bag of handles and counters. He averaged 19 points per game this season and held steady between his time on the Wizards and Hawks. His outside shooting actually took a dip after his midseason trade to Atlanta, but McCollum still hit 36% of his threes there; he was hitting 39% in Washington prior.
McCollum had a couple big moments in the playoffs hitting game-winners over the Knicks for upset wins in the first round. But he's still flying under the radar as a free agent and could be notably cheaper than some other veteran guard options. His free agency is also a positive for the Pistons, since they won't have to give up anything to another team to sign him.
Throughout his long career, McCollum has made a living out of getting to his spot and hitting tough shots. He's a solid shooter but doesn't rely too much on the 3-pointer. Instead, McCollum has a versatile skillset and is comfortable in the midrange. His proficiency handling the ball and finding his own shot are perfect for the Pistons to complement Cade Cunningham.
It's obvious now that Cade needs more help and the Pistons are on the clock to find some for him. He made First Team All-NBA this season, but didn't get enough offensive support in the playoffs to advance beyond the second round. Bringing in a poised veteran like McCollum can give Cade more rest and add some optionality to the Pistons offense in clutch situations.
There are some downsides to signing McCollum
Unfortunately, McCollum isn't the most perfect signing because of his defensive flaws. He'll be 35 entering next season, which makes defense a challenge already. Additionally, McCollum is a bit undersized at 6'3" and 190lbs so he's never been the strongest defender throughout his career.
However, the Pistons do have the personnel to cover up for McCollum. They've been able to work around weaker individual defenders on the perimeter the last two seasons. And having Cade Cunningham - a massive point guard and solid helpside defender - alongside McCollum in the backcourt can definitely mask some of the defensive flaws.
There are risks to signing CJ McCollum, but he could be well worth the gamble for the Pistons.
