The Pistons have relied heavily on Duncan Robinson as a shooter this season, but he has inherent defensive flaws which could be a problem in the playoffs. However, the Pistons have already found a potential fix to keep shooting on the floor with improved defense ever since Kevin Huerter has heated up. Detroit shouldn't have any regrets about featuring Robinson in such an important role, but it's nice to have Huerter as a reliable backup with less weaknesses.
Kevin Huerter can fill in for Duncan Robinson if needed
Huerter struggled to shoot the ball when he initially arrived in Detroit, but has turned it around recently. In his last 10 games, he's shot 36% from three on nearly 5 attempts per game while looking every bit the part of a proper movement shooter. Unfortunately, he was sidelined last game with an illness and could miss tonight's contest as well so the Pistons haven't been at true full strength despite overcoming other injuries.
But Huerter can give the Pistons a very important element with his shooting on top of his well-rounded game in other areas. He's a better defender than Robinson and also excels in other unexpected areas. For example, Huerter is surprisingly adept with his handle and can snake into the lane for a paint finish or pass to a teammate for an open look, if defenses run him off the line.
That's not to write Robinson off entirely either; the Michigan product has been a reliable hand for the Pistons all season long. Robinson's elite shooting has been a necessary spark for Detroit's offense and done wonders for his young teammates. But there have been games against elite opponents where opposing ball-handlers have relentlessly hunted him because of his defensive weaknesses.
Giving Huerter some of his minutes can keep a strong shooting presence on the court at all times while giving the opposing offense less weak points to exploit. In a long and close playoff series, this strategic adjustment could decide crucial games.
Kevin Huerter can earn his way back onto the team
Huerter is on the last year of his contract and slated to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. He's unlikely to return because the Pistons will have their hands full paying young stars this offseason. But Huerter could still prove his worth in the playoffs and find his way back.
It would be hard to resist pursuing a deal with a key piece of a deep playoff run, especially one as versatile as Huerter. If he has a great postseason including important moments as the team's shooting guard, Red Velvet could be here to stay. There's a lot on the line for Kevin Huerter in this year's playoffs.
