Pistons fans need to resist the urge to overreact after loss to Spurs

Not every team has a Victor Wembanyama.

After the Pistons lost by double digits to the Spurs, doubts resurfaced among the fanbase about how far this Pistons team can go. But it's important to remember that the Spurs are uniquely positioned to disrupt Detroit's playstyle and no potential playoff threats in the East have the same weapons. Even though the loss did emphasize some Pistons weaknesses, it doesn't have to be damning for the team's hopes this season.

The Pistons will match up better with other playoff teams

The Spurs' biggest advantage, of course, is the enormous man in the middle: Victor Wembanyama. His length and timing make him a defensive menace who controls the entire paint. This walled off many of Detroit's drives and forced misses inside the arc.

Beyond Wemby, the Spurs also have talented defenders at other positions. Reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle did an excellent job on Cade Cunningham and forced him into one of his worst shooting performances of the season. Cade's percentages had began to creep back up recently, but the combination of Castle and Wembanyama forced him into an off night.

Throughout this season, we've seen the Pistons thoroughly dominate the Eastern Conference. No other team in their own conference has had answers for Cade, even those with multiple high-level wing defenders. Without someone like Wembanyama backing them up, it's nearly impossible for defenders to take away all of Cade's counters.

Keeping that in mind, the Pistons and their fanbase should remain level-headed after this loss. They clearly have further improvements offensively as a team in a playoff setting. But there was nothing in this game that suggests they are likely to be early playoff exits. Instead, it can be a valuable learning opportunity at a critical point in the season.

Against other teams, the margins for error will be larger when a 7'6" monster isn't lurking to block shots on every possession. Hopefully the Pistons can also find creative ways to score when the paint is similarly walled off. Teams like the Knicks and Cavs have the potential to throw very long defenders against the Pistons, and they'll need some reliable ways of attacking in those situations.

But as it stands, the Pistons are still first in the East by a comfortable margin and poised for a great postseason run. They were also missing a key player in Isaiah Stewart to suspension, and his physicality could've gone a long way in wearing down Wembanyama. Just having his presence would've helped greatly when Jalen Duren got in foul trouble as well.

Hopefully, the Pistons learn from their mistakes against San Antonio and come out better on the other side. But the sky is definitely not falling after one regular season loss against a great team.
