Reports surfaced on Tuesday that Malik Rose has agreed to become the new assistant general manager of the Detroit Pistons. The news was first reported by Marc J. Spears of ESPN.

Malik Rose will report directly to Ed Stefanski, the senior advisor of the Detroit Pistons. The hope is that Rose will be a suitable candidate for general manager when Stefanski’s contract is up.

Rose has quite the basketball pedigree as both a player and executive. He is a two-time NBA champion (1999 and 2003), with both titles coming as a member of the San Antonio Spurs. As a general manager, he won the G League Executive of the Year Award for 2018.

Rose was drafted 44th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in 1996. He played 54 games for the franchise, before signing with the Spurs as a free agent following his rookie season.

Rose remained with San Antonio until the 2004-05 campaign, when he was traded to the New York Knicks mid-season. During his tenure with the Spurs, he averaged a career-high in points (10.4), rebounds (6.4), and assists (1.6) in 2002-03.

After spending a few seasons with the Knicks, Rose was eventually dealt to the Oklahoma City Thunder during the 2008-09 season. He retired later that summer.

During his career, Rose played in 813 games (only starting 85) and averaged 16.5 minutes per game. During those minutes he averaged 6.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 0.8 assists, and 0.6 steals.

The 43-year-old started his post-playing career as an analyst for the Madison Square Garden Network, along with being an analyst for the Austin Toros. In 2011, he was hired as an analyst by the Philadelphia 76ers – a role he held until 2015.

In 2015, he began his executive career as the manager of basketball operations for the Atlanta Hawks. Two years later, he was promoted to general manager of the Erie BayHawks (Atlanta’s G-League affiliate), where he was recently awarded Executive of the Year.

Now that the Pistons have most of their front office and coaching staff assembled (here and here if you missed it), what do you guys think? Are you happy with the hires that have been made?
