Detroit Pistons free agency needs: A power forward who can defend the perimeter

The Detroit Pistons have several guys who can play both the power forward and center position in Isaiah Stewart, Marvin Bagley III and Kelly Olynyk.

Saddiq Bey can play both forward spots, and they also have second-year player Isaiah Livers, who was impressive in his limited time last season, so it’s not like the Pistons have zero options at power forward after trading away Jerami Grant.

But other than Bey, Stewart (kind of) and Livers, none of these guys are really perimeter defenders, so the Pistons could use another long guy on the perimeter who can step out and defend some of the smaller stretch-fours that many teams have.

A guy like Bobby Portis would be the perfect fit here, as he can defend both big-man spots and shot 39 percent from 3-point range last season, so he ticks both boxes.

Portis is going to hit the free-agent market, but it is far more likely that he either returns to the Bucks or joins another team chasing a title.

There may not be a perfect player out there who fits both of these needs, so Detroit may resort to more trades to clear a couple of more roster spots and try to address them that way.

Stay tuned, as the Detroit Pistons are not done dealing yet and still have two glaring items on their offseason wish list.
