Drummond’s outlook

Pistons fans, enjoy Andre Drummond while you can. Odds are he won’t remain a Piston his entire career, and he certainly won’t be able to maintain his freakish athleticism for more than a few years.

Right now, Detroit has a once-in-league-history type of talent. If his production from the past couple of seasons persists, he may very well end up in the top three All-Time in rebounds per game, behind Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell (he’s currently No. 7).

Aside from the rebounding alone, Drummond produces in ways that virtually no other players can:

But because Drummond isn’t much of a scorer or an emphatic shot-blocker, he remains underrated and under appreciated.

His lack of offensive versatility or flashy defense does not mean he is not contributing to team success in meaningful ways. His services, on both ends of the court, cannot be replaced by a journeyman on a veteran’s minimum contract.

Instead of criticizing Drummond for what he is not, appreciate him for what he is – and the Pistons, if they re-sign him, should construct a team and game plan that accentuates his historic talents, not minimizes them.
